The 20 best vegan-friendly takeout spots and bakeries in Detroit, according to Yelp

What's the deal with vegan food? And why is it so damn good? It might be hard to believe that, given Detroit's thirst for blood (we're talking about coney dogs and pepperoni-covered Detroit-style pizza, duh!) that the Motor City is actually a haven for vegetarians and vegans as well, with many of the area's popular restaurants extending their menu offerings to accommodate those leaf-eating, tofu-devouring, totally seitan-ic folks. And, not to call our vegan friends out, but they certainly do have strong opinions when it comes to a restaurant's vegan menu options, which they absolutely take to Yelp to dish about. Whether they're gushing about just how moist a vegan brownie was or raving about the perfect vegan pho broth, vegans know what's up when it comes to the must-try meat-and-dairy free spots in the city. Hungry yet? Here are some of Yelp users' favorite vegan takeout spots for sweet and savory goods. If you don't agree with this list, you know what you must do: Yelp awaits.

20. Takoi
1464 Gratiot Ave., Detroit; 313-778-9258; takoidetroit.com
”The flavor combinations here are amazing. They are very accommodating to vegan/vegetarian diets. I'm vegan and there are always 10-12 things on the menu to pick from. It's great to come here with my non-vegan friends but still feel like I can partake in an awesome meal! Expect to spend at least $50 to try a few dishes and have a drink. Completely worth the price in my opinion!”— Laura F. on Yelp

“I used to come here and do work during the week, grab a coffee and a vegan breakfast sandwich. Within the past year there's been a few changes in the menu and floor plan, but it's still a great place to eat and grab a coffee. My husband and I went on a Sunday and had the blueberry pancakes, grits, breakfast sandwich and chai latte. All were great! I love the books that they have there as well.”— Ashleigh J. on Yelp

17. Cold Truth
4240 Cass Ave., Suite 100, Detroit; 313-680-1199; coldtruthsoftserve.com
”I drooled over photos of Cold Truth soft serve for weeks before finally venturing out to get some. With that much build up, reality doesn't always live up to expectations- but in this case, Cold Truth was even better than I imagined. The chocolate soft serve was the luscious, creamy texture I'm always pining for (and it was VEGAN!), and the lemon curd was refreshing with a delicious punch from the mulberries. Oh, and did I mention that their cones are vegan and gluten free, and I couldn't even tell! I'll be back for sure.” — Erin S. on Yelp

16. Harmonie Garden Cafe
4704 Anthony Wayne Dr., Detroit; 313-638-2345; facebook.com/harmonie-garden-cafe
“This is such a hidden gem. Affordable great eats, great friendly staff, little gold mine for vegans. Decided to go in on a whim after coming back from the bottom line coffee house. My friend I was with was surprised as they'd been here before and raved about it. We decided to split a vegan Zahra, which is like a sautéed cauliflower with onions which was really tasty, love the sauce the cauliflower was in. The hummus and pita it came with was also really tasty and definitely nice for like $12(?) We also had the pina colada vegan cake which was REALLY good. I haven't had a pina colada before myself but this was like a vanilla fruity cake with coconut creamy frosting. It was about $3-4? I was a little bummed they used the cake from the walk in cooler just because of the packaging but it was still super delicious. The staff was nothing but kind to us, can definitely see myself coming back again for some vegan Mediterranean goodness and sweets!!!” —Stone Z. on Yelp

“This place is a hidden gem and a total delight. The donuts are absolutely delicious - you can tell they're all hand cut since no two donuts look the same haha. They offer up classic donuts but also vegan ones - win! The vegan sweet potato one I had tried stole the show for me. The lemon glazed donut (not vegan) was also delicious - you could see the bits of zest in there. I definitely recommend folks stop in here and get your donuts. The two ladies working the day I was there were so friendly and let us try a few new flavors they had since it was our first time in. Support small businesses — stop into Dilla's!” —Aparna B. on Yelp

“WHERE DO I BEGIN? First of all. The pizza? SLAPS. Those frickin onion rings? A gift from the GODS. The salads? Enough to feed an army. THE CAAARRROTTTTS?!? The only thing that could get me to eat purely vegetables for the rest of my life. I don't even need to go further on the food because this place has bomb EVERYTHING. I'd also like to give a big round of applause for this place (who opened about a month before this crazy pandemic hit Detroit) for selflessly giving back to their community (feeding folks at Alternatives for girls, for one) and making sure that during all of this uncertainty, they offered up great food at prices that serve actual Detroiters. M&T, you're a true gem in this city and I hope to see more spots open like this. :)” —Nicole M. on Yelp

10. Detroit Vegan Soul
8029 Agnes St., Detroit; 313-649-2759; detroitvegansoul.com
“This place was so good I wanted to die, reanimate, then sit down and eat again as a zombie because zombies don't have to worry about how it looks to hwarf down three platters of food and a shake and a piece of cake at one sitting. They just do it.
This place, if it weren't for Surya Cafe in Madison, WI, would be the best vegan restaurant ever - and it IS the best soul food anywhere. We got two platters and shared them. EVERYTHING, absolutely everything - arrived at the table at the perfect temperature, texture and flavor. Ever been to a vegan restaurant that can't get the food in the window? Or the service is slow? This is NOT that place. My friends are omnivores and they were in heaven. The German Chocolate cake is to die for. Just get here. Take a plane or a cab. Do what you have to do but get here and EAT.” —Gina W. on Yelp

“This has been my all time favorite brunch spot since I've lived in Detroit the last 6 years. Anytime someone comes to visit I take them here. The food is amazing, the specials are always top notch, and the poutine is perfection! I became a vegetarian two years ago and the food is still just as good and they have vegan alternatives for my favorites, including poutine! Just finished having the vegan hangover special. They also serve cocktails here which they hadn't in previous years, so all your brunch needs are met! Highly recommend. In my humble options, best brunch in Detroit for meat eaters and vegans alike! Also, dog friendly patio when the weather is nice.” —Carla B. N. on Yelp

4. Avalon International Breads
422 W. Willis St., Detroit; 313-832-0008; avalonbreads.net
”Avalon is a fantastic (women owned!!!!) bakery/cafe with excellent fare and a lot of flair.
I'm particularly fond of this location because it's basically across the street from my childhood home so I get waves of nostalgia along with my fabulous goodies. They offer really high quality goods: breads, cookies, quiches, frittatas, and breakfast/lunch sammies (made with local cage-free eggs), local piggy yummy ham and bacon, and plenty of veggie and vegan options.
The coffee and teas are excellent as they should be and there are nice options if you need a little less caffeine in your life.
The staff are funny and quick. They will put your order together while you are still trying to process the joke they just made. And they will bend over backwards to accommodate any quirks in your diet. The outdoor seating in warmer weather is lovely, you get to people watch (and OMG there are some gorgeous people wandering by!) and often there are pooches to pet. Which always makes my heart sing…” —Anja F. on Yelp

“I arrived in Detroit exhausted from a long series of travels, slightly sick, and craving a good bowl of vegan pho. Like, a REALLY good bowl. Vegan pho can be hit or miss, with broth ranging from overly salty yet flavorless mystery broth to AMAZING broth that tastes the way vegan pho broth should cooked down with cinnamon, anise, ginger, etc. This was by far the best vegan pho broth I've had in a long time — possibly ever (outside of my own kitchen, or course! )
Rich, flavorful, and lacking the overly saltiness that makes you leave feeling gross. I would have liked more broth and less noodles, but that's just me. The salad was great — the only thing I would have liked to see different would have been to have had more of a variety of dark leafy greens. The miso goddess dressing was divine. The wait for a table was 35-45 min on a Sunday night, but I was solo so snagged a seat of the bar. Regardless, I'd say it's definitely worth the wait!” —Hana R. on Yelp

1. Pie Sci
5163 Trumbull Ave., Detroit;313-818-0290; piescipizza.com
“Pie Sci is absolutely out of control with its pizza concepts and I am here. for. it.
I love how over the top their pizzas are while absolutely nailing the taste as well. I've gotten vegan nachos/bacon Mac and cheese meals masquerading as pizzas, and I'm still not sure how they pull this shit off. The mad scientist vibes are too real.
I would describe their menu as typical entree items that they somehow ingeniously fuse into a pizza. You're getting anything but a typical bread/sauce/cheese slice (which they do still offer.) Yes, the medium is a pizza, but the experience is a dish traditionally not served as a pie.
Most of their pizzas can be made vegetarian or vegan, and they consistently switch up their menu with crazy new recipes. I love that they collab with other local restaurants to offer wildly creative specials. I'd do anything to be a fly on the wall when they come up with the names for all their pizzas because the wordplay/puns are undefeated. Just wish I lived a little closer so I could order from here on a weekly basis.” —Courtney B.. on Yelp
