Parks and Rec Diner

Nestled into the bottom floor of the Grand Army of the Republic Building, Parks and Rec serves up every dish you didn’t know you needed. The cinnafetti roll (you read that right) will satisfy any sweet tooth, while dishes like the standard will keep you coming back to try all of Parks and Rec’s savory options. Fair warning: You’ll want to Instagram every single thing you order.

OK, maybe we’re pointing out the obvious, but who would we be if we didn’t sing the praises of this OG breakfast spot? Come Sunday morning if you’re willing to wait, or stop by on a weeknight just because you can (the Dutch baby tastes just as good at dinnertime, trust us). No matter which location you visit, you’re bound to leave this metro Detroit staple happier than you arrived.

Toast

Contrary to its namesake, there is far more to this kitschy joint than crispy bread. We recommend the lemon ricotta pancakes and the bacon fried rice, though you truly can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Plus, Toast features an alarming amount of options for the day-drinker, from the salt ‘n vinegar martini to custom mimosas. If you’d rather spend your morning sober, take the campfire hot chocolate for a whirl.

Commonwealth Cafe

With food as upscale as the space itself, Commonwealth’s newly-renovated cafe is the perfect spot for both a quick coffee and a full-on meal. Their gourmet, minimalist fare will leave you feeling fancier than you actually are, and you’ll probably wind up buying a dozen macarons to go. Hey, it happens to the best of us.

Hudson Cafe

This cozy spot is an omelet-lover’s dream (there’s a chicken pomodoro option, this is not a drill).
