For lovers of charming yet provocative paintings, the first look at TIMESTEREO artist Davin Brainard’s new, large steamy vignettes is like tall, frosty Mexican coke on a hot summer day. Luscious familiar colors and bold stripes, one of his trademarks, encompass sensual hands and lips - imagery you find in the sacred grounds of local nail salons. Clouds and stripes layered across the surface of stenciled crisp edges. This isn’t his first brush with the feminine subject matter, back in 2004 he and other UFO Factory pals Warn Defever and Dion Fischer took over a Manhattan nail salon where customers got free artistic nail treatments.
Davin Brainard, who's been active in the Detroit arts community since 1992, is a visual artist whose work is a dynamic yet simplified reflection of the ironic and charming aspects of American pop culture. His process relies solely on a utility knife, spray paint and meticulously crafted stencils.
You can celebrate his latest work (pictured in this slideshow) at the opening reception of SHINY SHINY on Saturday, June 11th from 6:00 – 10:00 pm at UFO Factory. UFO is also hosting a gallery talk on Saturday, June 18 at 2:00 pm, where visitors will be able to participate in an informal conversation with the artist. The opening reception and gallery talk are free and open to the public.
