10 concerts happening in metro Detroit this week

Thursday, 2/4 - Kid Cudi - @ The Fillmore - After canceling and rescheduling his Especial Tour due to production reasons, Kid Cudi is finally making his way to Detroit. The Ohio-born rapper has been making a name for himself ever since his debut in 2008. He’s released five full albums, including 2015’s Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven, and even took up acting. Cudi was even the co-host and bandleader on IFC’s Comedy Bang! Bang! On Cudi’s newest release, he bends genre and even adds grungy guitar to the mix. It will be interesting to see how his prolific rap songs will add up when played with his new alt-rock styled album. Find out for yourself. Doors at 7 p.m.; 2115 Woodward Ave., Detroit; $49.50-$75.

Thursday, 2/4 - Mountains and Rainbows, Bonny Doon - @ Lo + Behold - Described as a “legendary evening with warming vibrations,” M+R will showcase what they have been working on in the past few months, as they’ve expanded to a double drummer lineup and allowed longtime members Ryan and Jeffrey to take turns as lead singer/songwriters. They’ve also recently recorded new material, enough for another double album already. Local acts Bonny Doon and Double Winter open, along with Baltimore-based band Outer Space. Friday, 2/5 - Pan African Youth Ghana Orchestra - @ International Institute - The International Institute presents the screening of the documentary film Legacy Alive. The documentary follows the Pan African Youth Orchestra, an electrifying combo based out of Ghana. In addition to the screening, there will be a special appearance by the Pan African Youth Orchestra themselves. There will also be special appearances from other artists and performers from Ghana. Saturday, 2/5 - DJ Spider - @ Sabrage - DJ Spider has been DJing and promoting events around the world since well before the EDM craze that has taken over our nation’s clubs. And Spider has DJed at lots of fancy spots, from major Hollywood events to the most famous nightclubs around the world, including multiple stops at Las Vegas’ premier hotels. DJ Spider will be performing a special one-night only event at Sabrage in Royal Oak. There will also be an opening set by DJ Denis Celic. Doors at 10 p.m., 401 S. Friday, 2/5 - Chris Young - @ Royal Oak Music Theatre - Sometimes you need a little bit of country music to get you through the last stretch of winter in Detroit, and Chris Young just might be the perfect artist to see. Young is one of the genre’s buzziest artists and last year’s impressive album, I’m Comin’ Over, proves why. The lead single, also called “I’m Comin’ Over,” went straight to the top of the charts giving Young his sixth No. 1 single. This Grammy-nominated artist be a show that any contemporary country music lover will not want to miss. Doors at 6:30 p.m.; 318 W. Fourth St., Royal Oak; $39.50.

Saturday, 2/6 - Pretty Ghouls @ UFO Factory - Garage-punk sensations the Pretty Ghouls are doing a special show with two of their favorite local bands for the release of their new, limited 7-inch record. Pretty Ghouls are one of the best acts to come out of Detroit in recent years; Sarah Stawski on guitar somehow sounds dead and alive all at the same time, while drummer T.J. Ghoul pounds the drums to no end, and singer Asia Mock is a complete freak of nature in the best way possible. They’ll probably soon be international celebrities, so see this band now so you can brag and tell all your friends you knew them when. Prude Boys and Caveman Woodman and Bam Bam Moss open the show. Sunday, 2/7 - The Obsessives, Household @ The Majestic Cafe - The Obsessives were originally inspired by other “the” bands like the White Stripes and the Black Keys before they had released any music, according to their Facebook page. The young duo from Philadelphia have been making music together since they were 15 back in 2012 (yup, that young) but their age doesn’t set them back on their debut album Heck No, Nancy. On record, they sound like a polished band that has been playing together for 15-plus years. There are emo-inspired guitar riffs with coming-of-age lyrics reminiscent of emo bands from 10 years ago. The Obsessives are joined by Household on tour, a Minneapolis melodic-punk band that just released their debut album, Time Spent in September. Wednesday, 2/10 - Freakwater @ The Ark - Freakwater borders the line between alternative and country, mixing raw guitars and drums with a country-folk twang. Their harmonies will absolutely break your heart while their lyrics have always been worthy of Denis Johnson or Flannery O’Connor, if not some mix of the two. Freakwater’s been together since 1989, well before No Depression magazine even thought to exist. The core creative duo remains Janet Bean and Catherine Irwin — both from Louisville, Ky. They are about to release their first album since 2005’s Thinking of You, and it’s called Scheherazade, and it’s pretty great. The album is out Feb. 5, just in time for you to buy one from them at the show. Doors at 7:30 p.m.; 316 S. Main St., Ann Arbor; $15.

Wednesday, 2/10 - Rayland Baxter, Margaret Glaspy @ Magic Bag - Singer-songwriter Rayland Baxter has traveled all over the world to form his own music styling and aesthetic. He borrows from the folk music that he listened to while living in Israel, to the classic country music that’s pumped out of Nashville, where he lives now. This past summer, he released his second album, Imaginary Man, wherein Baxter blends his folk lyrics and guitar with synths and heavy bass, reaching for a more mainstream folk sound. Baxter has opened up for such bands as the Civil Wars and Grace Potter, but he is clearly ready to headline. He will be joined on tour by soulful folk-singer Margaret Glaspy, another up-and-comer who you won’t want to miss. Doors at 8 p.m.; 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale; $12.
